Unlike THC, CBD is completely non-psychoactive. In fact, studies suggest it may inhibit the effects of THC. The human body is understood to have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which is a group of organic compounds and their associated receptors, the most prevalent of which are known as the CB₁ (mostly found in the brain) and CB₂ (mostly found within the immune system).

While CBD has a low chance of activating these receptors it can interact with the CB₁ receptor and diminish the ability for THC to bind to it, effectively blocking its effects to a certain extent. CBD can also interact with a number of other receptors which may be responsible for its effects.
